Porcelain onlays are a type of filling that are used to repair damage done to your tooth from either damage or decay. Onlays can restore the strength of your bite and the attractiveness of your smile. Onlays go over the cusp of the affected tooth and are used when the damage is more extensive than an inlay could repair but less than is required for a crown. They are durable, comfortable, and attractive, matching the color of your natural teeth.
You may choose porcelain onlays for one of several reasons. Your tooth may have become damage due to trauma or decay. You may have unsightly or broken fillings that you would like to have replaced. Or you m ay simply prefer their superior aesthetic appearance.
What makes porcelain superior?
Porcelain can be made to match your natural teeth, allowing the onlay to blend in. This can make the filling invisible, make your smile more attractive, and boost your confidence. Porcelain is also chip and stain resistant. The longevity of porcelain is another benefit, with many porcelain onlays lasting for 20 years or longer.
What to know about your porcelain onlay procedure
Patients can typically expect two visits to receive their custom porcelain onlay. The area will be thoroughly cleaned and any decay or debris will be removed. An impression of the tooth will be taken so the custom designed onlay can be crafted. Dr. Moorhouse will provide a temporary filling while your onlay is made which usually takes about two weeks.
The new porcelain onlay will be installed on the second visit to our West Palm Beach office. Dr. Moorhouse will test your bite for comfort and strength. There may be some tenderness for a brief time, especially when consuming hot or cold foods or beverages but is completely normal.
How to care for your porcelain onlay
Although porcelain onlays are resistant to chipping and staining, it is very important to maintain proper oral hygiene and eating habits. Be sure to come in for regular check-ups and cleanings. This will help extend the life and appearance of your onlays.
The cost of porcelain onlays
Many factors go into the final cost of porcelain onlays, including the extent of the damage. Scheduling a consultation with Dr. Moorhouse at our West Palm Beach office will give us an idea of how much needs to be done and how much it will cost.
